Frequently Asked Questions
How are Tahoe and Truckee schools doing?
Thanks to great teachers, innovative academic programs, and strong support from the community, Tahoe Truckee Unified School District is recognized for success in preparing local students for college and good jobs. Our great schools improve the quality of life in our community and protect the value of our homes.
What is Measure P?
Since 1989, TTUSD has relied upon local school parcel tax funding that represents over 6% of the school district budget. For over 45 years, this funding has supplemented unstable and inadequate funding from the State that only supports basic education. Unless renewed by voters, this funding will expire soon and over $5,000,000 will need to be cut, forcing teacher layoffs, academic program reductions, and increased class sizes. If approved by voters, Measure P would renew the current $148 annual parcel tax rate and increase it by $40 to account for inflation since the last renewal in 2018, for a total of $188.
Would Measure P support our teachers and academic programs?
If approved, Measure P would continue funding for 9 years and provide approximately $7 million annually in locally controlled school funding to continue:
-
Supporting programs in science, technology, engineering and math
-
Attracting and retaining highly qualified teachers
-
Maintaining career training programs for in-demand fields like health sciences and skilled trades
-
Maintaining manageable class sizes
How do I know funds would be used responsibly?
Measure P continues strict fiscal accountability, oversight, and transparency protections, including:
-
All money raised would stay local and could not be taken by the county, state, or federal governments
-
An independent oversight committee, annual audits, and public spending disclosure would continue to ensure funds are spent as promised
-
All funds go straight to teaching and classroom instruction, and no funds can be used for administrator salaries
-
Homeowners age 65 and older would continue to be eligible for an exemption and do not need to reapply
How many of our teachers depend on parcel tax funding to keep their positions?
40 current teaching positions in our schools depend on Measure P. Tahoe-Truckee schools have relied on locally controlled parcel tax funding for decades and this funding expires next school year. Without Measure P, teachers, academic programs, career training, and manageable class sizes will be cut.
How would funds be used to expand and continue Career Technical Education programs?
TTUSD’s diverse range of Career Technical Education (CTE) programs provide students with skills that lead to successful careers and rigorous college programs. Measure P will continue funding for CTE programs and create an opportunity to expand these programs through field trips and work-based learning experiences.
What would happen if this source of funding expires?
If existing parcel tax funding expires, TTUSD would have to cut approximately $5 million from its annual budget. This would mean cuts to academic programs and teacher and school staff layoffs.
How much would Measure P cost?
Measure P would renew the current $148 annual parcel tax rate and increase it by $40 to account for inflation since the last renewal in 2018.
I don’t have school-age children, why should I vote yes on Measure P?
Even if you don’t have school-age children, supporting quality education in local schools is a wise investment. Good schools improve the quality of life in our community and protect the value of our homes.
Would senior citizen homeowners continue to be exempt from the cost?
Yes. Homeowners age 65 and over would continue to be eligible for an exemption from the cost and do not need to reapply for an exemption.
Are any other exemptions available?
The only other type of exemption allowed for in state law is an exemption for low income homeowners with disabilities who qualify for federal SSI or SSDI benefits.
What level of voter approval is required?
Measure P must receive approval from two-thirds (66.67%) of voters casting ballots on the measure to pass.
When will Measure P appear on the ballot?
Measure P will be on the November 3, 2026 statewide General Election ballot.
